Anyone have any good plans for a small chicken coop?  DH has finally asked me to look into what we need to have chickens - we'll need room for both laying (6 or 7) and meat chicks.

Christine I just do a basic broth. Throw chicken in a pot of water, bones and all, along with onion, carrot, celery, salt, peppercorns. I don't bother peeling the carrot and the celery leaf goes into the pot for a ton of flavor. I make…

Christene, the easiest way I have found is to use a turkey baster when I can.  After I take the meat out, I let it settle and the fat rises to the top.  I just stick in a baster, and pull the broth off the bottom.  I get a small amt…

LOL, I remember hearing of someone who took the fat off the broth, then added butter to the food to make it rich...  I tend to leave some fat on mine on purpose.  Just a richer better flavor.  :)  And Vickie, your hubby is…

LOl my husband says we might need some of that chicken fat if times get too hard. I usually leave it on and scrape it off when I use it.

You can cool the broth over night so that the fat rises to the top and solidifies.  Very easy to scrape off.  Or you can can it and just remove the little layer at the top of the jar after you open it.  If you do option 2 and you have…

I'm with Sharon, back in prepping mode. I haven't done anything in several months but I dehydrated blueberries yesterday and canning meat (chicken and hamburger) this weekend.

Christene, we go through bean soup more than any other, followed by chili.  What are you looking for in a chicken broth?  It's kind of basic.  Maybe you just need to add the right herb for your own preference.

Sharon, I would be in TOTAL withdrawal after 7 mo of not canning.  The longest I've been able to go is 1 mo.  Happy soup day!

I agree wholeheartedly with the home canned soups, even the ones that I don't think are up to par, in my book.  I don't use recipes, I just cook, so every batch is a bit different.  My worst is still 5 star compared to the store…

Morning ladies!  I love my home canned soup.  The canned soup you buy is yucky.  Donna how did you dry the fresh cranberries?

A NEW LIFE INSURANCE POLICY - SELF-RELIANCE

Many people worry about life insurance policies to help secure their families in case of an accident or a loss of a loved one, but not many people think of a life insurance policy being something as simple as stocking up on staple goods, batteries, learning how to prepare food from scratch, grow a garden, build pedal powered machines in case your electricity is out or raise livestock.

A life insurance policy is a great thing to have, but if you do not have a way to get to a store during a disaster like Hurricane Katrina or even a potential war, money is not important. During Katrina, people could not even get gasoline to go to the store to buy what they needed and most stores were closed. It was a dangerous time to get out to find ice, food, or baby needs. Most people stayed at home and waited it out. If you have to do that, this site is a good place to start.

We hope this site will help women and men learn how to become self-reliant and get out from under the goverment. Becoming self-reliant is a way to have your own personal protest and will show the goverment that we can do it. Maybe if enough people learn to be self-reliant, it will send a loud and clear message to the government to leave us alone. What do You think?

My mom died from pancreatic cancer over 30 years ago.  Doctors actually refused to see her anymore, telling her to see a psychiatrist for her imagined health issues.  Pancreatic cancer was so rare then that it was the last thing on the list to look for, if it was even on the list at all.  Now?  Pancreatic cancer, liver cancer, stomach cancer are so common that we probably all know someone who has died from these diseases.

Have you noticed how many health conditions have exploded…

How to rid my garden of Early Blight / Septoria (Photo Heavy)

Posted by Laura on December 30, 2011 at 8:09am 20 Comments

I start all of the tomatoes inside, from seed.

I do so organically, using brand new clean cups, every year.

I have also used different seeds, each year.

Around mothers day in may, I plant my seedlings in the raised beds:

This year I planted them in 1 foot squares. So I had about 20 plants per 10 x 3 raised bed box.

I tested the soil with a…

Glenn Beck's "Be Prepared: An Introduction to Food Storage"

http://www.glennbeck.com/content/articles/article/198/48306/  Here is the site.

In the age of the 24 hour supermarket, food storage may seem like a crazy concept. But economic forces are converging in such a way that skyrocketing food prices no longer seem like a possibility, more and more they appear to be an impending certainty. While Glenn could be wrong about inflation, there’s no harm in being prepared.…

FOOD FOR THOUGHT!!!

Yesterday, I was thinking about the ingredients in processed foods and food in general. If the factory put ALL the ingredients from the time they grow it with all the chemicals, to putting in on the shelf, how many ingredients and chemicals would be added to the label? Thinking of that, would you eat it if you knew?

Eating organic is our best bet. I believe we would feel better, have…
